Diane, it would be the same as when you did the eggs, "floating paint".
You mix borax in warm water and drop your paints on top, whatever colors you like where ever you like on the water.
I have used both water and oil paints and the oil turned out nicer, because oil floats on water.
Then just dip, slowly, the item you wish to paint and blow the paint away from the centre where you will pull out the item,
if you don't blow the paint away when you pull it out you will repaint it.
You can also swirl the paints with a tooth pick after you dropped the piant on the water.
I was always going to try doing it with eggs, maybe this Easter.
The placemats I sprayed with a clear spray after they were dry so I could wipe them.
The paint does leave a rough surface so if you spray the item after it will smooth it up. Hope this helps.
