Mug or Icetea Coasters:

Evenly roll out clay to about 1/4 of an inch in thickness. Take a small crocheted doily a little bigger than the size of your mugs, because the clay will shrink about 10% when it dries and is fired, and lay the doily over the clay.

With a rolling pin, roll the doily into the clay.

With a heavy needle trim the extra clay from around the doily by pushing the needle into the clay and running it around the outside edge of the doily.

Carefully lift the the doily and the impression of the doily will be left in the clay.

If possible dry the coasters between two pieces of drywall or two flat boards to keep the edges of the coasters from warping.
Cover the boards with a plastic bag while the clay is drying.

Idea #2 Pottery:

Doily Impressed Dried Flower holders. (Makes 2)
Evenly roll out clay to about 1/4 of an inch in thickness. Take a
large crocheted doily about 8" across and lay the doily over the
clay. With a rolling pin, roll the doily into the clay. Lift the
edge of the doily and the impression of the doily will be left in the
clay. With a heavy needle trim the extra clay from around the doily
by pushing the needle into the clay and running it around the outside
of the doily. Lift the edge of the doily and pull the doily off of the
clay. The impression of the doily will be left in the clay.

Cut the clay circle in half. Allow the clay to stiffen for about 30-60
minutes. Make a cone shape out of the half moon. When the cone is the
desired size, score and slip the back of it. (For directions on how
to score and slip, please see the directions for the pottery angel.)
Put a hole in the back of the cone so it can be hung on the wall.
These cones are beautiful made out of porcelain clay. Once fired,
they do not need to be glazed. Put a plastic bag over the cones and
allow them to dry.
