I love doing the birdhouses with the stones.
A way I like to put the rocks on is to get outdoor liquid nails and goop it on real thick...then push your rocks in and you don't even have to use grout.

It squeezes between the rocks. Then I just give several coats of clear polyurethane to shine up the rocks and seal it. I found this works well for doing things with rocks and have never had one fall apart yet.
It's one of the birdhouses I made, using all the pretty colored granite I could find. I used small gravel like for a fish tank for the roof.
