Things I learned about septic systems to keep them functioning properly.
1. Never ever use bleach in a septic system. It will kill the bacteria that you want to be in your system breaking down all the waste.
2. Don't use antibacterial soaps either, not the dish soaps, hand soaps or body wash...it will kill the bacteria too.
3. Don't use liquid fabric softeners, it will gunk up your septic system. Use fabric softener sheets in the dryer instead.
4. Always read the label on cleaning products. If it does not say that it is safe for septic systems, don't use it.
5. Be careful what toilet paper you use. Most are safe for septic systems, but there are still some brands that are not...always check the label.
6. Avoid putting grease down your drains, that will not only gunk up your septic system, but your pipes too.
7. I was told also not to use the products on the market that they tell you to use in your septic system like Rid-X.
Have to keep our septic systems healthy to keep the land around it healthy too.

Well here is another one for you and I swear it is the truth... If you get low on bacteria in the septic system which I quess you need bacteria to break down all that goes in it. Old timers put a dead chicken in there to create more bacteria to get it back to working order again. Learned this from an old plumber I used to work for.

Well I quess you just can not do that then. My roommate says you could flush parts. Remember I said this was from the old days...maybe they had covers. Think I will get off the subject before I get in any deeper. lol

LOL Margie I put down some raw hamburger once in a while its the same principal as a dead chicken but allot smaller ,if you want to use dead chicken (not ) just open the cleanout door on your septic and showed it in there .But I think the hamburger once a year will be sufficient LOL Ivana

Oh deer I do hope you have the tank marked for future pup outs !!!!! Better ask huby if he knows where it is mine is about 3' away from the main cleanout hole . But yes you can flush your raw hamburger through the toilet or your carburetor that is fine . And one more tip for you use liquid laundry detergent as the powdered one tends to collect all the grease and that's what really stinks in the septic other then that you know the rest, Ivana

I know where the tank is Ivana. I was the one that told them where to put it and even took pictures while they were doing it. I took pictures of everything so I know where all the buried stuff is. It is about 10 feet from the back of the house buried under 2 or 3 feet of sand between my back steps and my maple tree.
I always use liquid clothes soap, I never liked the powder kind because of the residue it leaves on the cloths, so I can imagine it would make a mess of the septic.
