Drying Gourds
Drying a Green Gourd:
If you grow gourds, harvest them after a frost has killed the
plant's vegetation. You can bring the gourds inside to dry, or leave them
laying in the garden. Be careful if you have allergy to molds. Most
information recommend dry outside. The freezing and thawing of winter
does not harm the gourds.
To dry them outside, place them in a well ventilated space. Arrange
so that they are not touching. Indoors drying takes four months or
longer. When dry they will feel light and when you shake it you can
heard the seeds rattle.
Gourds are 90% water and as the water evaporates through the skin a mold
forms. if the gourd is not soft or damaged, it is good for them to get
moldy. Make sure the gourds are dry before painting on them.
