If you are going to cut open the gourd to use as a bowl, etc.
  You will need to clean the inside before painting.

filling with water:
  Fill the cut gourd with warm water & let stand 20 minutes.

Scraping the inside:
  Scrape out the inside with a sharp tool, such as a
  wood chisel or a wire brush. Repeat the soaking and scraping processes
  as needed till the gourd is cleaned. Let dry.
