Hi,
Does any one have any ideas or know of any sites on what we could make with pine cones. My son's kindergarden class has a box full of nice big fat pine cones, and we need some ideas as to what to make with them. Possible a christmas decoration....
would have to be something simple and easy to do, as they are 5 and 6 year olds.....
thanks for any help! Becky
here are my pinecones

there are two here to show what I did.
I used the preserved cedar but for he life of me I can't remember what was used on the cedar to keep it so green.
I used to know what it was.
I was thinking about adding 'snow' to them but I'm not sure. What do you think?
There is a glitter finish on them that I don't think you can see very well.
~normal -here's hoping I did it right again

Norma, I like these just the way they are. Now Angel would have you snowing everything in sight. Did you use glycerin to preserve these?

smart that is exactly what it was!
She used green food coloring too and tons of it!
For the life of me I couldn't remember what it was called.
It made it sort of rubbery and it turns out it's not cedar either. It's juniper bushes!
You know the bush that they made gin out of. It turned out so deep green and lush looking that's why I was hesitant to snow them.
I have seen cedar when it's glycerined and it turns the most wonderful shades of brown and gold!
I just could never afford to buy that much glycerine! There's a small cottage industry from B.C. that does it.

Becky;
-I would glue a tie to the pinecone...to hang.
-Paint the pinecone white...while the paint is still wet, roll it in glitter...kids have to make a mess. If the paint is not wet anymore then they can brush on glue..and then roll in the glitter.
-add pieces of Christmas picks to the top of the pinecone...tuck in a small bow and done.
Nature crafts bb or The Christmas bb are good BBs for this type of question too.

Becky,
Here is one I didn't remember before. Sorry.
A Tree
you need cardboard, scissors, construction paper, glue bits of yarn, rickrac or gold cord, even thin lace will work
1..glue the cone to a cardboard base either square or round, large enough to support the cone.
2...cut out shapes from paper round, stars, bells, if you use white paper the kids can color them. And glue to the cone tree putting the star on top.
3..using your scraps, they can be wrapped around the tree as garland. They can even make small bows from the yarn and glue on.
4... the base could be painted with poster paint or covered with foil.

Becky,
I don't know who posted it or what bb it was on, but they did a glittered pinecone and glued greenery with a little bird sitting in it on top; added a red ribbon bow hanger. I did a search, but could not find it. Sue L.

Hi Becky..my g/daughter is 6 and she just made a pinecone ornie with sparkles and snow on it...we glued a ribbon to the top and covered the glue with snow...she painted the sparkles on..so not much of a mess either...she was thrilled that it went on their tree!
I found this on another forum..they sound cute and easy!
Pinecones for ornies
I discovered a lovely way to use the pinecones that live in my neck of the woods. They are neat to soak in chemicals to make them burn in colors in the fireplace, but I like them as ornaments for my tree, too. Medium open pinecone (to open them dry them out), lots of small beads (I used fused strings and cut them apart), Any craft glue (I used Elmer's, Tacky, & Sobo on some).
Place a bead of glue on the tip of each of the leaves (?) of the pinecone and add a small bead of desired color. All over! Tie a silver or gold thread to the top for a hanger. These are lovely.
They can be made in one color all over, or in all colors, whatever your desire.
These can also be decorated with jewels (9mm I think would be about the right size) or the sets out of old rhinestone type jewelry. Even Holly berries (real or plastic) would make them attractive. In other words your imagination is the limit of the materials you can find and use. Last edited by GIsGranny on 11-27-02.

pinecone ideas

Marla,
A quick Christmas ornament with pinecones would be to put glue on the tips and sprinkle glitter on, glue a ribbon on top. If you have large pinecones that are open, you can use with pointy side up and make miniature Christmas trees. Spray paint green and put mini beaded garland around. Glue 5 pinecones in the shape of a star and spray paint gold or silver. I have been making Christmas tree forms out of grapevine and covering with pinecones. I also made some tree forms with hangers and attached pinecones to that to make pinecone Christmas trees. You could make a wreath with the pinecones, attach your bow to your wreath with tails hanging down and glue pinecones to the tails of the ribbon for a cascading effect. You could make scented pinecones for potpourri, firestarter pinecones.
If I think of anything else, I will post it. Hope this helps you a little.

styrofoam tree shape covered in pinecones

Hi Margie, You're welcome. Yes I thought the garland thing wasn't the greatest. Pinecones would be neat. I buy a form and put a plastic bag inside and stuff it with newspapers & then glue on the pinecones. Sometimes I bury minilights in it too. Last year I made one with outdoor lites and sprayed a clear acrylic on it. That way you can use it indoors or out. I fill in the holes with walnuts, filberts tiny pinecones. Sometimes I spray them gold or whatever. I even made a small pink one & added tiny pink dried flowers. I used styrofoam tree shape for this one.

pinecone tree for front porch

Marilyn, Great ideas. I have a lot of little pinecones and acorns that I was thinking of spraying gold for decoration. My front porch is covered and has 3 sections, sort of like shelves that I was thinking these would look great on. Then make a larger one to sit on the porch itself. I would spray with a clear acrylic since it is outdoors and use the mini lights. A red bow at the top and it would be beautiful. I just love decorating for Christmas. Have a tree in every room, even the bathrooms. Thanks again. Margie

colored pinecones & wax paper

When I was in grade school back in the '40's & early '50's we use to make xmas tree ornaments out of pine cones. We would take the pine cones and with our water colors(no acrylic's available) paint the tips of the cone.
We would then take those small square multi-colored mints, wrap them in wax paper(all we had then) and place them on the petals. We would then wrap the pine cone in wax paper or wrapping paper, attach a ribbon and place them on the tree for xmas morning. They were usually a present for someone from the kids. Larry
