#####Frances, I recall seeing something that may be what you are looking for.
Equal sections were marked off on the styrofoam ball, to resemble the lines that go up and down on a pumpkin.
(almost like the sections of an orange).
These marked sections were incised about 1/4 inch.
Then pieces of fabric were cut a bit larger than the marked sections.
The fabric was secured with pins on one of the marked sections, and a small instrument (like a nail file) was used to
push the fabric edges down into the incised spots on the styrofoam.

Then another piece of fabric was added next to the first piece and pushed down in beside it,
and then the other side pushed in, using the same method; and so on all around the styrofoam.
This will look sort of like a quilted pumpkin when completed. A few leaf shapes and a stem were glued to the top.
