sit upon's

Posted by kallen on October 21,

Materials:

*10 full sheets of newspaper
*Soap and water

Directions:

*Fold each sheet lengthwise until about 3" wide.
Note: if you "crease" the folds - so they don't open up -
they are easier to work with.

*Lay 5 sheets parrallel to each other on flat surface -
floor [not rug] works best.

*Lay other 5 sheets - one at a time - perpendicular to the ones on
the floor.

*Weave - over and under - each sheet into the bottom ones.
Remember to begin the next row "opposite"of the previouse one.
Example: R1 o-u-o-u-o. R2 u-o-u-o-u. Continue alternating rows.

*Push ALL of the sheets EVENLY towards the center leaving nice,
long tails.

*Tuck the ends of each sheet UNDER the edge row.
The tails will be long, so fold edge of tail under
once, then fold under previous row.
Turn over and complete other side the same way.

Make sure everyone uses soap and water to get the ink off their
hands -faces- before they touch anything else!
The ink has always smeared, but not sure of the new water based inks...

***Enjoy***

Subject: Re: sit upon instructions???

When I was in campfire we made sit upons by weaving the newspaper
into a pad, or some that didn't want to weave just used the folded
newspapers.

We took two pieces of burlap larger than the pad and covered the pad by
using yarn and taking a running stitch close to the pad.
We fringed the edges of the burlap and decorated the sit upon by cutting
symbols from iron on tape and ironing them to the sit upon.
We used symbols reflecting our Indian names.
