why not paint them, glue a magnet on the flat side and use the inside as a picture frame.
There will be room for anything they find in the woods like twigs, berries, bark, moss etc to frame their pictures or they
can use them to make a collage (mini of course) of things they found.
They could also use them as a base for pin cushions using stuffing and fabric scraps.
Two glued together at the rims and painted could make drums for Christmas tree decorations (glue the string in between too)
or singles with painted or glued on cuttings from cards could make cute christmas theme decorations or fridge magnets....
guess they'd be ok for hallowe'en, easter, St. Patricks day or any other such holiday.
Kids will come up with their own ideas if you have a basket of scraps and odds and ends and take them out in the woods
for the day or to the shore if you have one.
In short, don't toss them, turn the kids loose....glue, paint, trims and kids....you'll be shocked at the results.

Glue a wood ball to lid. Use Aleene's Tacky (not hot glue).
Fill jar with candy (candy corn for Halloween, M&M's or wrapped red/white peppermints for Christmas).
These babyfood jar dolls can be scarecrows, witches, Santas, elves, Leprechauns, etc.

Add approprite hair, hat, face and collar.
Collar is just a round material circle.
Cut into center of circle and cut a small circle to fit around neck area.
Put slit to back and glue collar in place.
Place glue around edge of jar lid, sticking material to it and tie a ribbon around edge to hold collar down in place.

These could also be frogs, dogs, cats, etc. For frog, glue two small wood balls to top of head for eyes.
How about a bunny for Easter..fill with jelly beans.
The possibilities are endless.
Put a large material circle on jar for a dress and make a girl.
Good hiding place for little trinkets.
I made one into a bear which holds bandaids..a Boo Boo Bear!
The head was done in soft-sculp..pantyhose.
Made material tube for arms and soft sculp hands.

One year my son made lovely Christmas trees out of baby food jars.
He stacked and glued them in a triangle. (Be sure to use glue made for glass and lots of it.) Inserted a piece of non flamable silver christmas garland into each jar.
Punched a hole in the lid just big enough to fit a small colored Christmas twinkle light through it.
The colors of the lights sparkle off the silver garland and was quite pretty.
I can't remember the exact number of jars he used for each tree, I think bottom row had 5 jars, them four etc.
experiment to get it looking right and not too big.
